More Solar Gain, Not R-Value, Better for Heating Climates

Two recent EBN articles touted breakthroughs in better insulating windows, with potential center-of-glass values of R-12 and R-20 [respectively: “Revolutionary Vacuum Glass Coming from Guardian,” EBN Vol. 17, No. 2, and “Alpen Fiberglass Windows,” Vol. 16, No. 10]. These pieces probably left most readers, especially those in heating climates, with the misleading impression that these windows were patently better than anything available today.
